Homemade Bread Sticks, Dairy Free

These bread sticks are a perfect blend of olive oil, garlic and crushed pepper flakes. Use an appetizer or a fun weekend snack.

Pizza Dough

  • 1 ½ cup warm water 105-110 degrees F lukewarm to touch
  • 1 ½ TBSP sugar
  • 1 ½ TBSP active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ TBSP olive oil
  • 3 ½ - 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp salt

Garlic Topping

  • 4-5 cloves minced garlic
  • ½ tsp parsley
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 TBSP Olive oil
  • Crushed red pepper flakes optional


Garlic Topping

  • Mince your garlic. Place your olive oil in a small bowl or jar and add the garlic, parsley and salt. Stir to combine. Set aside and prepare the dough.

Pizza Dough

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Pull out two pizza pans or 2 large cookie sheets and set aside. I use my pizza stones.
  • Pour the warm water into the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the sugar and yeast to the water and stir to combine. Let mixture sit for 5 minutes or until it becomes frothy and small bubbles form. Add the tbsp of olive oil to the yeast mixture and gently stir it in.
  • Add 2 cups of flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Using the dough hook to blend ingredients, turn the mixer on low speed until the dough starts to hold together. Scrape the sides and the bottom of the bowl. Add about 1 more cup more flour as needed and turn the mixer on medium speed and mix until smooth (dough will still be sticky). Add up to an additional ½ cup of flour to make dough less sticky. It should be forming a kind of ball on the dough hook.
  • Remove the bowl from the stand and add about a ¼ cup and knead it until it is a nice smooth ball of dough. Transfer to a floured surface and knead into a smooth dough, adding up to ¼ cup extra flour if it’s too soft. At this point I separate it into two balls of dough.
  • Roll each dough ball into nicely flattened circles. Pat into desired shape by using the palm of your hand or roll it out with a rolling pin. I use a piece of parchment paper with a bit of flour or cornmeal on it to roll it out. That way I can place the pan over top and flip it over onto the pizza pan.

Adding the Topping

  • Stir the olive oil and garlic mixture and then spread onto the prepared pizza dough. I spread it starting with a spoon and then use my silicone brush if I feel like it needs it.
  • If desired sprinkle a light amount of crushed pepper flakes onto your bread sticks before baking.


  • Bake at 425 F for 13-15 minutes. It will look a nice brown colour on top when it is done. Remove from the oven and let sit for a few minutes. Transfer to a wooden cutting board and cut into rectangular strips.
  • Serve with dipping sauce of choice. We like ranch or my homemade tomato dipping sauce.


Poke small holes using a fork or a knife. This will prevent the dough from bubbling up. If it does bubble while baking it won’t hurt your bread sticks at all.
