Easy Recipe for Dutch Apple Pie
This recipe for Dutch apple pie is easily made dairy free and has a perfect streusal topping with a tasty apple filling. And the best part? The crust is not pastry, so there’s no rolling pin involved and you still end up with an amazing dutch apple pie!

What is dutch apple pie?
It is an apple pie that is made with pastry crust for the base and delicious streusel topping instead of more pastry. The streusel is made out of flour, sugar and butter. It can also be made with a crumble type or shortbread crust.
How do you make it?
In order to make a dutch apple pie you will need a crust, crumble topping and an apple filling. Combine them all and then bake them for about 40 minutes.

How do you make dutch apple pie dairy free?
In order to make this pie dairy free I use plant butter. It is a good replacement for the butter that is normally used in pies. You could also try using coconut oil for this recipe. It might be a bit of a different flavor but I believe it would work well. If you try it let me know how it turns out! I use coconut oil to make my dairy free apple crisp. It has a simalar struesal topping and has a great taste.
How to make the crust and streusal topping

In order to make the crust and the topping I mix together:
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup oatmeal
- ¾ cup plant butter or regular butter, melted (I use country crock plant butter)
Once I have mixed those ingredients, together I set aside 1 cup of the mixture for the topping. The rest I use to form a crust in my pie plate. Pour the rest of the crust mixture into a 9” pie plate. Spread it into the pie plate to form a crust by using the palm of your hand to form the bottom and work it up the sides of the plate. You want to leave a bit of room at the top for the crust to expand. Don’t spread it all the way to the edge of the pie plate.

Ingredients you need to make the apple filling
To make the filling you need these ingredients:
- 3 cups diced apples
- ¼ cup white sugar
- 1 TBSP brown sugar
- ¾ tsp cinnamon
- ⅛ tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1 TBSP coconut oil
- ½ cup water
- 1 TBSP cornstarch
I cook them all together to form a nice syrup.
Preparing the apples
For this recipe I noramlly use gala because it is one the cheaper apples and is great for baking! First off, I dice the apples. I like to make mine fairly small. You can also peel them if you like them better that way. Once you have them chopped, place the diced apples in a medium sized bowl. Then add in the white and brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Set them aside so that the apples start to form some juices.

How do I make an apple pie filling?
I love making apple pie filling! Especially for the recipe for Dutch apple pie. Cooking the apples first gives them a great flavor and forms lovely thick syrup that will bubble up through the crumble topping on your dairy free dutch apple pie.
Place a medium sized frying pan over medium heat and add in the TBSP of coconut oil. Once the oil has melted add in the apples and all their juices.
While the apples are cooking, mix together the cornstarch and water and set aside.
Cook the apples until a thin syrup starts to form. At this point you can stir the water and cornstarch and then add it to the apples. Cook it until the syrup is thick and bubbling. Make sure you are stirring the apples and the sauce constantly after adding the water and cornstarch because it will thicken up quickly. Remove it from the heat.

Putting it all together
Pour the apple filling into the crust and use a spoon to spread it out evenly. Use the leftover cup of crumble topping to sprinkle evenly across the top of the pie. There is no need to press it down, just let it sit loosley across the top.

How to tent a pie crust
I always tent my pie crust by using strips of tin foil. This ensures that the outer edges of your crust don’t become crispy. Cut 3 strips that are about 2 inches wide and pinch it around the top of the pie plate. I always make sure it covers the top edge of the crust.

Baking the pie
Bake for about 40 minutes or until the crust is a nice brown and the syrup is bubbling up through the crumble topping. remove from the oven and serve with your favorite dairy free ice cream!

I am so excited to try this Dutch apple 🥧 David was hinting that he would like some pie when I said I have apples to use up. I like apple crisp better but maybe this could be a compromise we both like.
