Try this super yummy coconut latte instead of your regular morning cup of coffee. It has a light coconut flavor and you can garnish it with cinnamon for the perfect drink.

No milk frother or espresso machine needed. Use a handheld frother or a mason jar to froth your milk.  And use strong coffee or homemade espresso for your base.

Dairy-Free & Vegan: It’s naturally a dairy free latte and vegan friendly drink! 

No Fancy Equipment: If you have espresso use that, but if not use double strength coffee or homemade espresso substitute.

Few Ingredients: It’s made with simple whole ingredients that you probably already have on hand. 

Ingredients Needed:

  • Full-fat Coconut milk: use canned coconut milk for a very rich creamy drink. Oat milk would be a the closest substitute. You can substitute almond or soy milk but they won’t render a very creamy latte (or be a coconut latte ;).
  • Espresso Base: Use double strength coffee like this iced coffee recipe, a double shot of espresso if available or a substitute.
  • Pure Vanilla extract: Starbucks uses their vanilla bean powder. You can purchase vanilla bean powder on Amazon.
  • Brown Sugar: I use light brown sugar or coconut sugar works too. Or use a little maple syrup. Starbucks uses their turbinado sugar syrup for their latte.

Customize to Your Taste

This creamy coconut milk latte is easy to customize to your taste preference. My sweetener of choice is maple syrup. I tend to use whatever I have on hand like a vanilla syrup. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon for garnish and you have the perfect drink.

I also like to add a bit of almond or oat milk. I find when using canned coconut milk it’s a good idea to thin it out slightly. It’s so creamy that a bit of almond milk creates the perfect balance to the latte.

So you may know Starbucks has two hot coconut lattes. A coconut milk blonde vanilla latte and cascara coconut milk latte. There are other coconut drinks you can order there like coconut milk mocha macchiato.

Coffee Beans to Use

If you want an authentic Starbucks coconut coffee, use their blonde roast which is a light roast espresso bean. I use what I have on hand and that’s normally %100 Arabica beans. 

If you have the Starbucks blonde roast use that (btw I love the blonde roast). But if you’re like me, just use your coffee of choice.

Best type of Coconut Milk

A regular coconut milk (from a carton) won’t make a very creamy coconut latte. I like to use the canned Thai Kitchen coconut milk. Or I also like the Kroger brand coconut milk. If you want to substitute it for another plant-based milk a creamy cashew milk is a good option. 

Diet Friendly Options

If you are on the keto diet, this delicious latte can easily be made without added sugar. I would add some coconut oil to give it a higher fat content. Without the sugar, the simple ingredients already make it lightly sweet.

Or if you simply want it to be refined sugar free, I recommend using maple syrup or honey.

How We’ll Make our Coconut Latte

Grab your canned coconut milk, double strength coffee and let’s get barista’ing. 

Step 1: Make Espresso or Coffee 

Brew double shot of espresso or strong brewed coffee. 

Strong Coffee: Use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to brew one 6oz cup of coffee.

Espresso Substitute: Steep 2 tablespoons ground coffee in half cup hot water hot 4 minutes and strain. Full instructions here.

Step 2: Heat & Froth Milk

Heat your coconut milk with the sugar in a small saucepan on the stove. Or mason jar in the microwave (mine takes about 1 min. 20 seconds to heat). 

Once it’s hot, place it in a jar with a lid and shake vigorously until foamy. It takes 20-30 seconds. Or you can pour it into a french press and use the plunger to create froth.

Step 3: Mix Latte

Add the espresso or strong coffee to your large serving mug. Then pour the milk over top. Garnish with cinnamon and enjoy.

  • 1 ½ tablespoons brown sugar or cane sugar, maple syrup
  • Double shot of espresso or ¾ cup strong coffee* or substitute**

Instructions

Prepare Espresso Base

  • Prepare your espresso, strong coffee*.

Heat & Froth Milk

  • In the microwave or a in small saucepan on the stove, heat the coconut milk annd the sugar until it's just steaming. Then pour it into a mason jar and shake vigorously until it starts to foam. Or use a french press to froth.

Mix Latte

  • Pour your espresso or coffee into your mug. Then add in the frothed coconut milk sugar mixture. Sprinkle with a touch of cinnamon and enjoy.

Notes

*Strong Coffee: Brew a 6oz cup of coffee using 2 TBSP of ground coffee. 
**Espresso Substitute: Steep 2 1/2 TBSP ground coffee in 1/2 cup hot water for 3-4 minutes. Strain using a a fine mesh strainer covered with paper towel. Use as your espresso base.
